Candle Care & Safety Tips
Get the Most from Every Burn
A beautifully hand-poured soy candle deserves a little care. Follow these simple tips to extend the life of your candle, maintain an even burn, and keep your home safe.
The First Burn Matters Most
The very first time you light your candle, allow it to burn until the entire surface has melted into a full wax pool — this usually takes 2.5 – 3 hours for a Monaco Frosted Glass Jar. Extinguishing too early creates a "memory ring" that causes tunnelling on every subsequent burn, wasting precious wax and fragrance.
Trim Your Wick Every Time
Before each burn, trim your wick to approximately 5 mm. A trimmed wick produces a cleaner, steadier flame with less soot and mushrooming. You can use a wick trimmer, nail scissors, or simply pinch off the charred tip once the wax has fully set.
Burn Time Guidelines
- Monaco Frosted Glass Jar: burn for 2–4 hours at a time, never exceeding 4 hours in a single session.
- Tea Light Soy Candles: standard tea lights burn for approximately 4–6 hours; maxi tea lights up to 8 hours.
- Little Sampler Tin: ideal for shorter 1–2 hour sessions to explore a new scent.
Keep the Flame Safe
- Never leave a burning candle unattended.
- Keep candles away from draughts, fans, and air conditioning vents — moving air causes uneven burning and can cause the flame to flare.
- Place candles on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from flammable materials such as curtains, books, and bedding.
- Keep out of reach of children and pets.
- Never burn a candle for longer than the recommended time per session.
Extinguishing Safely
Use a candle snuffer or gently dip the wick into the melted wax pool and straighten it again — this eliminates smoke and prevents hot wax from splattering. Avoid blowing out your candle, which can send a plume of smoke through the room and disturb the wick's position.
When to Stop Burning
Discontinue use when approximately 10 mm of wax remains in the vessel. Burning below this level can cause the glass to overheat. Once finished, the Monaco Frosted Glass Jar can be cleaned out and repurposed as a beautiful storage vessel or planter.
Storing Your Candles
Store candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. UV exposure can fade the colour of the wax and diminish the fragrance over time. Keep lids on when not in use to preserve the scent throw.
Wax Melt Care
Our Soy Wax Clamshell Melts are designed for use with an electric or tea-light wax warmer. Never add water to your warmer, and replace the wax once the fragrance has faded — the wax itself does not evaporate, only the scent does. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for your warmer.
